ABOUT THE READERS
Barbara Ramsdell grew up in the mountains of Western North Carolina. With a background in environmental science and outdoor education, she writes fiction about what happens when people come into contact with aspects of the natural environment. When she's not reading and writing, she enjoys a good hike or knitting a sweater.
Victoriano Cárdenas (he/him) is a trans poet and writer from northern New Mexico. His book, Portraits as Animal, was published in 2023 by Bloomsday Literary Press and was a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award. He wrote several main characters and storylines in Meow Wolf's LA location (opening 2027), and he co-wrote the script for the New Mexican sci-fi Audible Original, Eminent Domain (2021). Cárdenas is also the winner of the inaugural Stephen Graham Jones Horror Novella Competition. His dog Dio says hi.
Mitch Marty is a writer and photographer from rural Wisconsin. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of New Mexico, and though he now lives in the high desert, he can still hear the ghosts keening from back home.
Ari McGuirk is a writer and teacher living in Albuquerque with his Boston Terrier, Albus. Born in Mexico City and raised across the US, his work interrogates home, family, grief, and memory. He’s at work on a full length memoir and has had work published in Cagibi, true magazine, The Line Literary Review, and others.
ABOUT UNM CREATIVE WRITING PROGRAM
UNM’s English Department offers a full array of creative writing workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction on the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Undergraduate students may register for introductory, intermediate, and advanced workshops in all three genres. Additionally, they are invited to attend readings sponsored by UNM’s Masters of Fine Arts Program and participate as readers on Blue Mesa Review. Qualifying undergraduates interested in pursuing creative writing on the graduate level are encouraged to work with a faculty mentor on a creative writing Honors Thesis. And every fall undergraduate creative writers compete for the prestigious Lena Todd Awards, a small cash stipend and the opportunity to share their work at the Works-in-Process Reading Series.
UNM’s MFA Program in Creative Writing is designed for graduate students committed to pursuing the writing life. This three-year degree combines studio-based workshops in fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction with craft seminars and coursework in literature, teaching pedagogy, and professional writing.
